JULY EVENT: LAKE PLACID

Overseer Horus has established a stable portal to a remote lake in 2296's West Virginia. For the next 72 hours, all residents are welcome to visit the area and partake in whatever leisure activities they want! Don't worry, the medical bot will be happy to provide sunscreen, Rad-Aaway, Rad-X, and water, so don't you worry about soaking up some sun or other forms of radiation poisoning!!

The lake is just under 20 acres, and a walk around the shoreline is about a mile. It's surrounded by an unkempt wilderness that seems to be stuck in a perpetual stage of late summer/early autumn. It's been over a century since the last nuclear blast, so the water is only mildly radioactive. Nothing a little Rad-X can't fix!

At the northern edge of the lake is a pre-war bed and breakfast, which has been repurposed and abandoned all over again in its 200 year life. It's at the head of a dead-end road, one of which ends at a caved-in tunnel about a mile and a half down the way. The B&B consists of three floors, a few bedrooms with bathrooms, a basement with a locked supply closet and icebox, a kitchen, and a modest lobby with a broken computer terminal.

The southernmost point has an derelict dock and boat shed that's more dirt than shed. There are a few fishing poles, however, and there do seem to be fish in the water. They don't even look that mutated, if you ask me! A large fishing boat lies mostly submerged near some rocks in the center of the lake.

For the next 72 hours, residents are free to enjoy a relaxing lakeshore vacation; swim, fish, boat and scavenge all you want! It isn't like there's anything slumbering in the depths of the lake to get in the way!

Three Day Forecast

Sunrise: 6 AM

Sunset: 8:45 PM

Bugs are most active from 4-8 and 3-7

Overcast in the morning with a light drizzle until about 9am, when the weather clears to blue skies and only a few clouds. A light breeze all weekend -- this is as ideal as weather on this planet can get.

Notable Flora

Blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries all grow here, largely unchanged from radiation. They're safe to eat in small batches, but if you eat like three pints of them you're gonna be very slightly radioactive.

Firecracker berries -- bright red, glowing berries that will explode like their namesake if disturbed. Harvestable (they make a great mixer, but the crackling/popping effect fades over time, so no luck getting that from the automat!)

Carrots, corn, melons: pretty much just like normal.

There are a mix of pine and elm trees all around the area; the view from the top reveals nothing but more tree canopy for miles; to the north/north-west is a cliff face that's not impossible to climb, but could result in death if you took a fall.

Lilypads and reeds dot the lake, as well as snaptail reeds, which can be reduced into a symple syrup or ground into a sugar substitute. You're probably not going to do that, but it's true!

Notable Fauna

Bloatflies -- black flies twice the size of your head. They spit larvae at people. A solid kick or punch will down these soft but disgusting flying monsters.

Bloodbugs -- a small swarm of them move around the lake throughout the week. These are mutated mosquitos, which are, as you can guess, huge and gross. They will try to suck your blood, and can take probably 2 pints off you in one go. Just as easy to squash as the bloatflies.

Radstag -- mutated, 2-headed deer that love the blackberries in the area. These are peaceful animals that will run rather than attack you, unless you corner them or just want to have them chase/attack your character. There's even an albino radstag that can be found around the early morning.

There are some lightly mutated critters around, too! The squirrels and rabbits look like they've been stricken with mange but do seem to be living fairly normal lives; the frogs have all the right appendages, even if they glow with a blue biolumnescense; lucky residents may even spot a fox or two in the forest! None of these creatures will attack, but all of them are very tasty.

HORUS WOULD LIKE TO REMIND ALL RESIDENTS THAT THE STATION IS A PET-FREE FACILITY! He can't stop anyone from putting a frog in a jar, BUT IT'S STRONGLY DISCOURAGED, OKAY???

Points of Interest

B&B: The front desk has a broken terminal and a variety of items that were once for sale, now sitting unused and unwanted. Souvenirs, old Nuka-Cola, dusty comic books all on display and untouched. Suitcases from pre- and post-war visitors can be found in the rooms, which are dirty but surprisingly well furnished. The only thing suspicious at all is the locked metal door in the basement, secured with an inactive keypad. Oh, and the skeleton in the icebox, I guess.

Despite how quickly the place seems to have been abandoned, there is no sign of a fight or struggle. Not even with the skeleton in the basement! This minor mystery can be solved by simply looking in the front desk trash can, where a bunch of crumpled papers reveal rough drafts for some kind of leasing agreement.

"I, Clemence M. Cold, hereby do relinquish offically give ownership to all six West Virginia Premiere Motel locations to the person settl huma adventurer who finds this note. If Foundation is rebounding, this place can be a goldmine! The ternmal terminal has all the info you need to get started in the hospitality industry!

(The final draft has fallen behind a table underneath a large bulletin board covered in local flyers. The complete version includes a flowery signature and the date it was signed: April 2121.)

Collapsed Tunnel Cars caught under rubble still have the skeletal remains of their passengers inside. Those who go digging around will find that there have been multiple landslides here over the years. Dig too much, and you might trigger one yourself!

Lakeside: There are some campsites dotting the area around the lake, with tents in various states of disuse and old fire rings. Some have instruments, like guitars or banjos. The bugs move from campsite to campsite throughout the day.

Boathouse: Found at the southern end of the lake, directly across from the B&B, this is a pre-War shed that was repurposed post-War into a rental office. Fishing supplies can be found here, including rods. There's a worn sign that shows some rules about boat rentals, and a stack of folding lawn chairs, likely meant to be set up for long spats of relaxing by the shore. The dock here has seen better days, but it seems to be stable enough to stand on.

Deep Woods: The western cliffs cut off most of the southern side of the area as well, but one can find forests for miles in the south-east/eastern direction, eventually terminating in cliff that drops way WAY down into a swampy mist. If a resident is unlucky (or a player is mean enough), they might run into some stray Mirelurks, mutated bears, or worse. There are also strange shrines that can be found in discreet locations, built out of dead trees.

Everything on here is available in ambiguous quantities so nobody has to double-check to use it. All items are 50-200 years old. Feel free to use this as a jumping off point for other kinds of scavenged loot you might find! If you have any questions, just ask!
